Wo sind die Grenzen der Wissenschaftlichkeit? Where are the limits of Science?

On the 5th November, as part of the University of Bern’s UniBE talks series, Prof. Dr. Eva Gluenz, PD Dr. Caroline Schlaufer, and Prof. Dr. Volker Thiel from the MCID joined a lively panel on whether science has limits and if there is a single definition of “scientific-ness”. The panel reflected on real-world experiences, from political pressure and media exposure during the pandemic to the instrumentalisation of research in policy contexts. They emphasised that the criteria for what counts as “scientific” are not fixed but must be continuously negotiated within academic fields and with society. The discussion concluded with the consensus that there is no single universal mode of scientific practice, and that transparency about uncertainties and discipline-specific contexts is key to maintaining public trust.
