On Wednesday, 11th February 2026, the MCID, together with the Swiss Biorisk Alliance and the Institute of Infectious Disease, hosted a preview screening of Blame, the latest documentary by acclaimed Swiss filmmaker Christian Frei. The event drew a full audience, reflecting the growing public interest in the film’s timely themes of science, politics, and global interconnection.
Blame explores the complex intersection of virology, public trust, and political discourse, following the scientific process while exposing how crises often give rise to simplified narratives and polarised opinions by focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic. With its blend of intimate storytelling and investigative depth, the film provided a thought-provoking foundation for the evening’s discussion.
Following the screening, moderator Caroline Schlaufer (MCID Ethics and Policy Lab) led an engaging panel discussion featuring film director Christian Frei, biosafety expert Katrin Summermatter (Head of Biosafety Centre, IFIK), and virologist Volker Thiel (MCID co-Chair). Their conversation offered perspectives from both the scientific community and the creative process behind the documentary.
Audience members were invited to participate, prompting a lively exchange that touched on a diverse range of issues—including the challenges of scientific funding, public perceptions of biosafety, and the growing polarisation within media and politics. The discussion highlighted the importance of transparent communication and cross-disciplinary dialogue, especially in an era where misinformation and rapid news cycles can overshadow careful scientific work.
The evening concluded with a shared appreciation for the film’s ability to open space for nuanced debate and for bringing critical questions about science, society, and responsibility to the forefront.
