Deciphering the impact of viral proteins and variants in human translation
A defining principle of any viral infection is the absolute dependence on the host cell's protein machinery to produce new viruses. A remarkable feature is the inhibition of the host protein synthesis and the usage of the translation machinery to produce viral proteins. The inhibition of during SARS-CoV-2 infection illustrates how translation inhibition can impact on the Covid-19 disease outcome. My research focuses on how persistent mutations may impact the translation of host cells. Understanding the principles of this interplay is a unique opportunity to improve the therapeutic or preventive potential against those viruses.
